What is the born again experience? It is you tapping into the character and power of God! Webster's Dictionary defines the word “born” as “being brought into life or being; having certain qualities or abilities innately.”
When you were physically born into this world, you were packaged with a body, soul (your mind, will, and emotions) and spirit. When you become born again, your spirit connects up with God's Spirit and you come into communion with God. When that happens, His Spirit dwells in you, and you become a new being or creation. You receive a new life or being. All of God's “innate” characteristics become a part of you; they become your innate characteristics. His very Spirit image lives in you. You receive God’s divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). The Scripture tells us that we are created in His image (Gen. 1:27); Jesus is His exact likeness (Heb. 1:3; Colossians 1:15). So, if you would like to know what your new character looks like, take a look at Christ. It would be impossible to describe here all of the goodness of God, every facet of His character that dwells in you once you are born again, but we can look to the Scripture to find out what you now look like in your spirit. Galatians 3:22 tells us the fruit of the Spirit is “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” We are joint heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:17), and because God’s Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, and might rest upon Christ, so too we receive the same (Isaiah 11:2). The very same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you (Romans 8:11)! Think about that. Do you realize what power you have, through Christ, as a born again believer? Power to move mountains and destroy the yokes of darkness that had you bound, power to reach others with the love of God to bring healing, liberty, and the abundance that a Christ-centered life has to offer. Do you realize how beautiful you are as a child of God? Maybe not yet, but you will come to see yourself the way God sees you...precious, powerful, valuable, important, and loved.
You may ask, “Well, how do I deserve to be like Christ, or how do I deserve to be in communion with God?” You don't. This is not something you have to earn by being good; it is not something you obtain by earning brownie points or gold stars in Sunday school. God has provided the born again opportunity for every person ever created, just because you are you, just because He loves you and wants fellowship with you, just because of His grace and loving kindness toward you.
Next, you might ask, “How can I be born again?” Simple. God has given to every person the measure of faith (Romans 12:3). Just take that step of faith, and ask Jesus to come into your life and make you God's daughter or son. You can do that right now where you are, just as you are. You don't have to fix yourself up to become His. You don't have to correct all of your mistakes, put on your best clothes, shine your shoes, fix your hair, or get your act together in order to be accepted by God. He loves you and wants to be a part of your life...just the way you are right now. He wants to bless you, comfort you, and bring you His joy and peace. All the goodness that you can imagine is only the start of what God has planned for those who accept Christ as their Savior! If you would like to be born again and come into fellowship with God, pray the prayer below. All of the angels in Heaven rejoice when you become born again or saved (Luke 15:10)...saved out of darkness and born into the light of His love and presence (Colossians 1:13)!
I rejoice with you! How exciting your new journey will be! God has good plans for you. Now, the most helpful thing you can do is start reading the Bible to learn about all the love, promises, and blessings God has in store for you. Find a Spirit-filled church so other believers can come along side of you and help you grow in God, help you heal from hurts, and help share in your joy! Your new journey will be the most exciting adventure of your life!
Rejoicing with you as a born again child of God,
If you have never made Jesus the Lord of your life and desire to, pray this: Dear God, I believe that Jesus is your Son, that He died on the cross for me and was resurrected for my redemption. I choose to make Jesus the Lord of my life. I thank you for forgiving me and for filling me with Your Holy Spirit. I thank You that I am Your child, that You are my Father, and that You have great things planned for me. Amen.
